Earth Mined Diamonds

Earth mined diamonds are natural diamonds that formed deep within the Earth and were later recovered through mining. At Alexis Gallery, they are one of the stone options that we help clients explore for their custom engagement rings. In this guide, we break down everything clearly so you can understand what an earth mined diamond is, how it is formed, how it is assessed, and what to keep in mind when choosing a stone for a custom ring.

A diamond’s origin matters, but it is only one part of the picture. The cut, the proportions, the way the stone looks in person, and the way it works in the finished ring all matter too. Explore all of our diamond education guides to stay informed on all things diamonds, and choose the centerpiece of your custom ring with confidence.

What Earth Mined Diamonds Are and How They’re Formed

An earth mined diamond is a natural gemstone made of carbon that formed deep within the Earth over a very long period of time. Volcanic activity later brought diamond-bearing material closer to the Earth’s surface, where it could eventually be mined. Diamonds are known for their hardness, but they are also valued for the way they handle light (ie. sparkle) and for the natural variations that make each stone different. That is part of why two earth mined diamonds can look quite different from one another, even before you start comparing cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.

From Mine to Finished Diamond

A rough diamond does not look like the polished, sparkling centre stone people picture in a finished ring. In its natural form, it can look uneven, muted, and far less striking than expected.

The sparkling, sharp appearance people tend to envision comes later, after loose diamonds have been sorted, cut, polished, and graded. Each of those steps affects the final result.

An earth mined diamond may begin in nature, but the way it is handled after mining has a direct effect on how it looks once it is set.

How We Evaluate Earth Mined Diamonds

When we assess an earth mined diamond, we separate origin from quality. “Earth mined” tells us the diamond is natural. It does not tell us how bright it will look, how clean it will appear, or how large it is. That is where the 4Cs come in: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.

Cut has the biggest effect on sparkle. A well-cut diamond can look bright, lively, and balanced. A poorly cut one can look flat, even if the rest of the specs sound appealing on paper.

Clarity refers to internal and external characteristics called inclusions..

Carat weight measures weight, which is not always the same as visual size.

Colour refers to the amount of body colour visible in a diamond. Colour is graded on a scale starting from D going all the way through Z.  The closer to D, the less colour in the stone.  The most common colour visible in white diamonds is yellow.

The last element that will impact the stone is its shape. Earth mined diamonds are available in a variety of classic shapes like round, oval, princess, pear and more.

There is no universal perfect diamond. The right stone depends on the ring, the setting, and the details that matter most to the person wearing it.

Earth Mined Diamonds and Sourcing

At Alexis Gallery, we source/curate diamond for each client, one by one.  This means if there’s a certain detail you’re focused on, we’ll focus on it too. Or if you don’t know much, you can trust our expert team to find you a stone that’s clear, white and brilliant while maximizing your budget. We are careful about the stones we bring in, and we believe that part of the process should be made clear to clients. Ethical sourcing is an important subject, but it is also one that gets reduced to buzzwords very quickly.

We prefer a more thoughtful approach. That means asking questions, working with trusted suppliers, and being upfront about what sourcing language can and cannot tell you. For us, this is about choosing natural diamonds with care and talking about them in a way that is honest, grounded, and easy to understand.

Earth Mined Diamonds vs. Lab Grown Diamonds

Earth mined diamonds and lab grown diamonds are both real diamonds. They share the same basic material, appearance and qualities. The only difference is their origin. An earth mined diamond formed naturally within the Earth over time, while a lab grown diamond was created in a controlled setting.

That sounds simple, but it can shape your decision in a few different ways. The natural history of an earth mined diamond can be a meaningful part of the appeal. In other cases, the focus is on size, budget, or creating a very specific look within the ring design that may guide a client towards a lab grown stone. That is why we look at the stone itself, the ring you have in mind, and what aligns with your values and priorities. Done properly, both options can lead to a beautiful custom ring.
