Are Natural or Lab-Grown Diamonds Better?

Choosing a diamond is one of the most exciting parts of custom engagement ring design. It’s the sparkling centerpiece of a ring designed specifically to tell the story of you and your partner. In recent years, the conversation around diamonds has expanded beyond just the 4 C’s to include both earth mined and lab-grown diamonds.

Both are genuine diamonds. They share the same chemical properties, crystal structure, hardness, and light performance. The Gemological Institute of America explains this clearly in its research on the difference between natural and laboratory-grown diamonds, noting that laboratory-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition and physical properties as those formed underground.

At Alexis Gallery, our approach to all decisions is to lead with information and support, not judgement. There are so many factors that can influence someone’s decisions in the design or materials they use, our job is to present the options and facts and let you make a decision that aligns with your vision for the rings as well as your values and your budget.

As we do during the design process,  here we’ll walk you through the main distinctions, including how the diamond forms, its appearance and quality, so you can decide for yourself if natural or lab-grown diamonds are better.

Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamonds: Which Is Better?

How Earth Mined Diamonds Form

Earth mined diamonds form deep within the Earth’s mantle under intense heat and extreme pressure. Carbon atoms crystallize into diamond over extremely long geological periods. Many of the diamonds used in jewelry today were actually formed hundreds of millions of years ago.

Volcanic activity carries these crystals toward the surface through geological formations called kimberlite pipes. Mining operations recover rough diamonds from these deposits, after which the stones are cut, polished, and graded before entering the jewelry market.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Created

Lab diamonds form in controlled environments designed to reproduce the conditions required to create diamonds. Production begins with a small diamond seed placed inside specialized equipment where carbon atoms attach to the crystal and gradually build the stone.

Two methods are widely used for this process:

  • High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) recreates the intense conditions found underground.
  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) grows the diamond from carbon-rich gas inside a chamber.

The finished stones are real diamonds (chemically, structurally, and in appearance) and are graded according to the same gemological standards used for earth mined stones.

Appearance and Quality

Earth mined and lab created diamonds display the same visual properties once they are cut and polished. Their brilliance and fire depend primarily on the quality of the cut rather than the origin of the diamond. Gemologists evaluate both types using the four Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. These criteria measure the proportions, colour internal features, and size of the stone.

The only way to truly tell the difference between the two visually, is with specialized laboratory equipment capable of detecting the microscopic growth patterns within the crystal.  The average person can find the stone origin noted on their certification and laser inscription on the girdle of their stone (lab grown marked with “LG” preceding the inscription number).

Durability and Everyday Wear

Diamonds rank ten on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, which makes them highly resistant to scratching. This durability is one reason they are widely used in engagement rings and other jewelry worn daily.

Lab-grown diamonds share the same crystal structure as natural diamonds and exhibit the same hardness. With routine care and occasional professional cleaning, both types of diamonds can remain in jewelry for long periods of time.

Price Differences

Lab-grown diamonds generally cost less than earth mined diamonds of similar size and quality. The range in prices for diamonds in general varies depending on the characteristics of the stone and current diamond market conditions.

Natural diamonds depend on geological deposits and diamond mining operations, making them more difficult to obtain. Lab-grown diamonds are produced in controlled facilities where supply can expand as production technology advances. As a result, laboratory-grown diamonds appear at lower price points for comparable carat weight and grading.

Choosing the Right Diamond

Choosing a diamond starts with understanding how different stones compare and how that fits into your personal priorities and values. If you or your partner prioritize the romance of a stone formed under the earth’s core, perhaps an earth mined diamond is best for your ring. If you know your partner prioritizes a 3.00 ct. size and quality, if you haven’t set aside 80,000-100,000, lab grown may be your perfect option.

Earth mined and lab-grown diamonds share the same gemological grading system, but they differ in origin, rarity, and pricing. Looking at diamonds in person and reviewing their grading reports makes it easier to see how cut, colour, clarity, and proportions influence how a stone actually appears.

At Alexis Gallery, diamond selection happens alongside the design of the ring. We source stones specifically for each client and review them together so their visual qualities can be seen clearly in real lighting in person. Comparing diamonds side by side and talking through how each one will sit within the setting helps narrow the choice and shows how the stone will look once the finished ring comes together.
