Carat weight and millimeter dimensions describe two different things. Carat measures mass. Millimeters measure physical size. Both appear on a grading report, but they are not interchangeable.

A metric carat is the equivalent to 0.20 grams (that’s around the weight of a raindrop)!  It’s standard practice to  measure carats to the hundredth decimal place as they are so light that this tiny weight shift can make a difference. 

While there are benchmark sizing correlations between carat weight and millimeter dimensions, carat weight alone does not indicate precisely how large a stone appears. 

Carat as a unit of measure can also feel very unfamiliar to most people, while millimeters are something most people have some reference to. Millimeter dimensions are the most accurate number when you’re trying to understand visible length and width or diameter.
