How Much Should A Custom Engagement Ring Cost?

Custom Engagement Ring Toronto

If you’re in engagement ring research mode – you’ve likely landed on this question: “how much should a custom engagement ring cost?”

The answer isn’t magic – and we’re going to demystify it.

While there are obviously several variables within this equation, the biggest factor on the price of your custom engagement ring is the centre stone.

If you’re looking to maximize your budget, or you’re just starting your research, here’s what to consider:

#1: Type of Stone:

There are many options to consider for your centre stone choice – not just diamonds! Lab Sapphires, morganite, moissanite – the list goes on.

And if you are looking for a diamond, an earth mined diamond is priced differently than a lab grown diamond.

In general, mined diamonds are the most expensive centre stone option while moissanite offers an affordable gemstone option that looks similar to a diamond.

Sapphires and other coloured gemstones are generally priced based on how close they are to ‘ideal’ colour – so looking for more unique colours can actually result in a better value.

#2: Gemstone size

Regardless of the material you’re working with – the general rule is the price increases with the size of the stone. The biggest stone may not always be the best choice either – think about your partner’s style when choosing size.

#3:  Cut, Colour, Clarity

Once you’ve narrowed down your stone type and size, the stone’s cut, colour and clarity influence the price of your centre stone greatly. We know the sweet-spot to maximize quality and budget.

The remaining details of the ring will influence the price – things like intricate accent diamonds, large halos etc. will increase the price.

Our most important piece of advice after making hundreds of engagement rings:

It all boils down to is your priorities and lifestyle. For some, an engagement ring is nothing more than a symbol of commitment and neither partner cares about status or materials. For others, it’s an investment, a family tradition or a future heirloom.  Spend time thinking about which of these categories you fall into and let that guide you.

Our approach when it comes to budget:

Choose a budget that works for you, without putting a strain on yourself.  We believe in working within your means. We work with the budget you provide and only source stones that will fit within it.
